Common Rates at checkout setup scenarios

Use these examples to choose the right rate type and configure common shipping pricing scenarios.

Rates at checkout can be configured in many different ways depending on how you want to charge customers for shipping.

The examples below cover some of the most common setups using Dynamic, Fixed, Formula, No Rate and Courier rate configurations.

Service level vs rate

Service level

The delivery option shown to your customer at checkout, such as Standard Shipping, Express Shipping or Free Shipping. It also controls information such as handling time and the expected delivery timeframe.

Rate

The price calculation configured within the service level. This determines how much the customer is charged when the configured conditions are met.

Scenario 1

Charge approximately what the courier will charge you

You want your checkout rate to follow your courier pricing, while still allowing you to configure conditions for different delivery zones.

Use a Dynamic rate.

Dynamic rates use cached courier pricing based on the rate card on your account.

You can then configure conditions such as weight or order value limits and make pricing adjustments where needed.

Scenario 2

Charge a flat R100 for every delivery

You want customers to pay R100 regardless of the delivery zone.

Use Fixed rates.

  1. Create a Fixed rate for the Local area.
  2. Turn off free shipping and enter R100.
  3. Save the rate.
  4. Repeat the setup for Main and Regional areas.

Scenario 3

Free shipping from R450 for Local and Main areas

You want Economy delivery to be free when the order value is R450 or more for Local and Main areas. Other orders should continue using a Dynamic rate.

Combine Fixed rates and Dynamic rates.

Free shipping

  1. Create a Fixed rate for Local with a minimum order value of R450.
  2. Enable free shipping.
  3. Repeat the same setup for Main.

Remaining orders

  • Local Dynamic rate with a maximum order value of R449.99.
  • Main Dynamic rate with a maximum order value of R449.99.
  • Regional Dynamic rate with no order-value limit.

Scenario 4

Charge R60 up to 5 kg, then R5 per additional kilogram

You want Local Economy deliveries up to 5 kg to cost R60, with an additional R5 per kilogram for heavier shipments.

Combine a Fixed rate with a Formula rate.

  1. Create a Formula rate for Local.
  2. Set the minimum weight to 5 kg and the additional rate to R5 per kg.
  3. Create a Fixed rate for Local with a maximum weight of 5 kg.
  4. Set the Fixed rate to R60.
  5. Configure Main, Regional and any other service levels separately as required.

Scenario 5

Do not offer delivery to a specific area

You do not want to return a shipping option for a particular delivery area or tagged location, such as a high-risk area.

Use a No Rate configuration.

  1. Create a rate and select the relevant area or tag in the Shipping to field.
  2. Select No Rate.
  3. Enable Do not show any rates.
  4. Save the configuration.
  5. Repeat this for every service level where the restriction should apply.

Scenario 6

Show the customer a live courier rate

You want the checkout price to be based on the current rate returned by the courier instead of a cached, fixed or formula-based price.

Use a Courier rate.

Courier rates request live pricing based on the applicable shipment and address information at checkout.

You can configure the rate within the relevant service level and apply the applicable conditions for:

  • Delivery area
  • Weight
  • Order value
  • Other available rate settings
